Now we are going to get into sitemaps for a bit. There are two types of sitemaps that I concern myself with when I make a website. They are sitemap.xml and sitemap.html files.
Let's look at these one at a time.
Dealing with a sitemap html page on your money making website
The easiest way to look at a html sitemap is this is your sites table of contents on one page. Why do you need one? Because the main search engines recommend it. They are relatively easy to set up. Here is a sample sitemap for a page that talks about Roberto Clemente. A base ball star for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 60's and 70's:

Each listing will be a page of your website and each one will be a clickable link to get to that page. This way, if a reader wants to look at all of your pages, they can go to the sitemap page and start clicking.
If you have an exceptionally long website with thousands of pages, you can break the sitemap down into categories or have two sitemap pages instead of listing 1000's of pages on one sitemap page. It is recommended that if your sitemap is over 300 pages that you either have a second sitemap page or use categories.

Let's look at sitemap.xml for your money making websites.
The sitemap.xml page is a completely different and very important animal. This is what search engines use to check your site for new and updated pages to index or re-index your site. They can be very long and complicated or you can simplify the process by investing in a program to do it for you. There are a lot of good sitemap creation programs on the web and I highly recommend that you use one. Below is an actual

I don't want to put that much time and effort into building a sitemap.xml file and neither should you. Especially if you are going to have 10, 20 or even 100 money making websites to deal with. I would rather use a few mouse clicks and have all of this done for me.
sitemap made for our job search site. It probably looks complicated and you may even think that this is starting to get to difficult but let me tell you this. All I did was tell my sitemap creator program where my website was and IT does the sitemap for me as well as upload it to the web AND submitted the changes to all of the major search engines. It was easy to set up and from there it takes 2 clicks to get this done. These sitemaps are absolutely necessary if you want your site to be updated on the web. I wouldn't rely on meta tags (more on these later) to insure that your site is updated online.
Sitemap creation programs can save a lot of time and effort.
